Origin- Madhubani painting or Mithila Painting is a style of Indian painting, practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar. The name Madhubani Painting is named after the village Madhubani. The Madhubani painting or Mithila Painting originated at the time of the Ramayana, when King Janak commissioned artists to do paintings at the time of marriage of his daughter Sita, to Shri Ram. During auspicious occasions walls and floors used used to be decorate by this Art by the women, Painting is done with fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks, etc, subsequently these paintings were done on handmade paper, cotton as well as silk cloth. These paintings are normally done on festive occasions like Holi, Deepawali, Durgapuja, Kali Puja and Chhatha Puja etc
Award- Jagdamba Devi was first artist from Mithila to receive National Award in Mithila paintings. In 1975, President of India gave the Padma Shri award to Jagdamba Devi, Jagdamba Devi's foster son Jaynarayan Lal Das and his wife Kusum Das are also well-regarded Mithila artists, and they won the National Award jointly in 2008 and Anu Das has been learned this art from her mother Kusum Das.
